Light and Life to All He Brings (Luke 1:57-80)

This sermon was preached by Caleb Yap.

Sermon Outline

1.Chapter 1: Birth (Lk 1:57-58)

  • God gives barren Elizabeth and old Zechariah the miraculous gift of life — a baby boy.

  • Whereas Zechariah had been struck dumb by doubt, he learns to trust in God’s Word. He names his son “God is gracious” (John).

3. Chapter 3: Bursting (Lk 1:64-75)

  • Regaining his voice, Zechariah sings the “Benedictus” about how God has kept His ancient promises.

4. Chapter 4: Blessing (Lk 1:76-80)

  • Zechariah sings about what his son will do — prepare Israel for the coming Messiah.

Reflection Questions

  1. What is God saying to you from His Word today? What has He told you, through the Scriptures, about Jesus?

  2. This Christmas do you, like Zechariah, find it difficult to believe God‘s gracious promises to you? Why?

  3. What did Zechariah learn that made him burst into worship — does anything stand out to you?
