Sermon Schedule — The Gospel of John: Behold the Son

It has been said that the Bible is like a river in which a lamb can walk and an elephant swim. This old adage is particularly true of the Gospel of John. It is plain, yet profound; simple enough for a child to understand, yet so deep that it would take more than a lifetime of study to mine its theological riches.

Its subject matter is inexhaustible, for John portrays the glories of Jesus’ person and work. In this Gospel, we encounter Jesus through His signs, His teaching, and His glorious death and resurrection. Jesus is fully God and fully man. He is the Word who has become flesh to reveal God the Father to us.

Such deep theology serves a primarily evangelistic purpose. John tells us in John 20:31, “These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” But the apostle’s intention is not just to bring us to initial saving faith. He wants us to know Jesus better so that we grow and persevere in Him.

Themes

The Gospel of John will teach us some key truths and doctrines. We will see how Jesus, the Son of God reveals the Father. It will also help us to see that Jesus is fully God and fully man and is the Christ, who fulfils the expectations of the Old Testament. The glory of this Son is ultimately displayed through his death and resurrection. The gospel of John will also show us how salvation entails eternal life, which we can receive now by believing in the Son. The three Persons of the Trinity — Father, Son, and Spirit — are united in the work of redemption. God is sovereign in the salvation of sinners.

Aims

Therefore, through this series, we pray that we might:

  • Receive eternal life through believing in Jesus, the Son of God

  • Grow in Christ, as we behold more of His glory

Schedule

We will spend a large part of our year in this book. We encourage members to prepare by reading the passages either before the sermons, and continue meditating on it even after it has been preached. To help us with it, here’s the schedule:
