Mind Your Language (Proverbs 10:12-21)


Sermon Outline

1. Our words are powerful

  • Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.(Pr. 18:21)

  • There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing (Pr. 12:18)

  • The lips of the righteous feed many... (Pr. 10:21a)

  • The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life…(Pr. 10:11a) 

  • By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown(Pr. 11:11) 

 2. Our words matter to God

  • Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight.(Pr. 12:22) 

  • Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.(Pr. 16:24; cf. Eph. 4:29)

  • To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is! (Pr. 15:23)   

  • When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.(Pr. 10:19)

  • The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer.(Pr. 15:28a)

  • Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.(Pr. 17:27)

  • Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.(Pr. 4:24)

  • A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul. (Pr. 18:7) 

3. Our words reveal our hearts

  • Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. (Pr. 4:23)
