The Big 60
Carrie recently turned 60 and reflects on God's grace for her all this while, while being assured of His continued faithfulness for the days ahead.
This year, Kai Mun and I turn 60—now everyone in GBC knows our age! We have heard much about 60 being a milestone of life and the celebrations that go along to commemorate this age. It’s no exception for us too! I went on a cruise recently with my friends from secondary school (without our husbands) to celebrate this momentous turn of age. We are planning a trip with a few church friends of the same age to mark this milestone too.
As I reflect on my 60 years of life, the question I ask myself is, "What then or what is next?"
Of course, there are many things to give thanks to God for. I’m eternally grateful to God for the salvation that I’ve found in Christ, a loving and supporting husband who expresses his love for me in practical ways, the salvation of my parents, the different trials that God has allowed to strengthen and grow me to trust in His plan and goodness especially in my battle against breast cancer, the GBC community that I love, the opportunity to serve God full-time etc. The list goes on and all these are evidences of God’s grace in our lives, that both Kai Mun and I don’t deserve but God has lavished these precious blessings on us (Eph 2:4-5).
As the old hymn goes:
And can it be that I should gain
An int'rest in the Savior's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me?
Well, with this milestone, there are things that Kai Mun and I also start to talk about and one of which is death. However, more importantly, we want our lives to count for God. Though the road ahead has a lot of “unknowns”, though our bodies will grow weak and our eyes will go dim, we want to get old for the glory of God—"So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come." (Ps 71:18)
In the words of John Piper, “getting old in a way that makes God look glorious. It means living and dying in a way that shows God to be the all-satisfying Treasure that He is.” I pray that we will persevere in the Lord, stay satisfied in the Lord, that our lives will flow from the all-satisfying and all-sufficient Lord, that our hearts will find complete rest in Him and live as servants to Him and to meet the needs of others.
