When Everything is Crazy: Trust and Obey

January 22, 2017 Speaker: Series: Not Ashamed of the Gospel

Passage: Acts 1:6–1:26

“Not Ashamed of the Gospel : When Everything is Crazy: Trust and Obey”
Acts 1:6-26

Introduction: The Christian Church began with a small, diverse remnant (vv. 13-14):

• the eleven (v. 13).

• the women (v. 14b).

• the family (v. 14c).

1. (v.6)—a Crazy Message
“So when they had come together, they asked him,
‘Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?’”

the Big Idea:

“Truth” that is refracted by the filter of our flesh, is not truth at all.

2. (vv. 7-8)—Crazy Resource
He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father
has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy
Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and
in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth’.”

the Big Idea:

1. To God belongs the authority ; to us belongs the assignment!

2. God-given assignments require God-given resources.

3. (vv. 9-11)—Crazy Assignment

the Big Idea:

Being His witness is to be the main thing we are about… until worship is the main thing!

3. So this is What Obedience Looks like (vv. 13-26):

a. We Return (v. 13)

b. We Pray (vv. 13-14)

c. We Elevate God’s Word (vv. 15-16)

the Big Idea:

When waiting for promised power, “God-lovers” do not look for more followers.

They seek to find those whose desire is to trust and obey.

They look for apostles who consider themselves to be on assignment.
