The First Week of Advent: The Coming of Hope!
Romans 15:8-13

“Advent”—an English word that is borrowed from Latin,

Adventus means arrival or “coming.”

In this first week of Advent we celebrate the Arrival of Hope—

Defining Hope—Hebrews 11:1—

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Hope is the gravy that reminds me: the meat is on the way!

1. Hope Arrives when Promises are Kept! (verse 8)—

“For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,”

i) Jesus served the culture and traditions of the Jews in order to demonstrate God’s integrity.

Isaiah 2:3—
Salvation was not only coming to the Jewish people, it was coming through the Jewish people.

ii) Jesus’ arrival stirred up the hope that all the announcements of the prophets came straight from the heart of a reliable God.

2. Hope Arrives when Diverse people are United! (vv.9-12)—

“and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,
“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.”
And again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” And again, “Praise the Lord,
all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him.” And again Isaiah says, “The root of
Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.”

Unity is a primary characteristic of the God who comes to live among us.

3. Hope Arrives when Power is Manifested! (verse 13)—

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

Luke 4:18-19—
• The poor are enriched when power arrives that is stronger than their poverty.

• Slaves are liberated, when power arrives that is greater than that which enslaves them!

• The blind see when light arrives more powerful than their darkness!
