VII. Conclusion

“Jesus seems to have seen himself as reliving the experiences of Israel in the wilderness. When invited to turn stones into bread he quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’ (Matt. 4:4). His feeding of the five and four thousand (Matt. 14:13ff.; 15:32ff. and parallels) recalls God’s provision for Israel. This parallel is explicitly alluded to in John 6:25ff., where Jesus identifies himself with the true bread from heaven: the disciples must eat his flesh if they would enjoy eternal life.” – Gordon J Wenham
