Introduction
- Paul didn't tell the Philippians to grit their teeth; his writing spoke of joy.
- He knows that true joy can only be found in Christ (even when things aren't going smoothly for us)
- Something we should ask ourselves: who we are worshipping?
Characteristics of Christlikeness
1. Obedience empowered by God (v.12-13)
- Attitude and response
- Paul asks us to work out, not work for, our salvation (cf 1 Cor 9:25-27)
- We obey because we may not know what God wanted until many years later
2. Conduct energized by Gospel (v.14-16)
- Living out the identity that we have in God. This practically means not grumbling or disputing to break up the unity, and also being blameless and innocent, having a wholehearted devotion to God instead of succumbing.
- Gospel gives us the direction and power to fulfill the conduct required of us
3. Joy encourages by community of faith (v.17-18)
Conclusion
- We are citizens of heaven whose lives have been radically transformed by gospel, and therefore, Christ is our ultimate model of living.
- "Say no to self and yes to Jesus always", and we are called to obey always, with a conduct that reflects Christlikeness, in our homes, schools and workplaces.
