The Undivided Heart

March 22, 2015

Passage: Psalm 86:11–13

The Prayer for a United Heart

  • The idea of "unite": a heart with one purpose, no distractions

The Characteristics of a Divided Heart

  • The lack of clear loyalties (1 Chronicles 12:33): not a "double heart ".
  • The lack of clear priorities (Matthew 13:1-9,18-23): parable of the soil. Jesus explains the parable in verses 18-23 and shows us that the seeds cannot take hold because of the worry of the world and deceitfulness of wealth.
  • The united heart keeps the right order of priorities
  • The lack of clear spiritual identity (Daniel 1:8): who are we? Are we God's people and what does that mean? While Daniel's culture changed, his character did not.

The Goal for a United Heart

  • To fear God's name, to fear God
  • The Meaning of fear in the Bible: for the unbeliever (Luke 12:4-5) and for the believer (Hebrews 12:28-29). It speaks of a reverence and awe for God
  • Fear is important for it is the basis for wisdom (Proverbs 9:10)
  • The results of having the fear of God (Psalm 86:12-13): heartfelt thanks to God, to glorify God. There is a fresh acknowledgement of God's loving kindness and a spirit of humility

What can we take home?

  • Every age and generation need united hearts. Every age and generation need to revere God
  • Pray to God to give you an undivided, undistracted heart that fears him so that you may see Him more clearly, may hear Him more distinctly, may love Him more passionately, may obey Him more devotedly, may serve Him more faithfully

Do you want God to unite your heart? Pray for it
