What are You Thankful for?

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thess 5:16-18)

This year’s Thanksgiving celebration at Grace Baptist Church was a very special one.

A joint effort by the Ladies’ Ministry and Enjoy ministry, members of GBC who gathered for a time of Thanksgiving on 22 Nov were ministered to by a beautiful time of worship and praise.

Four guitarists - Ding, Lawrence, Elizabeth and Yee Kiat - with Ben as percussionist, and song leaders Belinda and Eddie, strummed and plucked and tapped and sang deeply moving songs of thanksgiving to God as they led the congregation.

The inter-generational band met up only three times before the event to put the music together. Each time, they met after work and practised till late. Each time, they experienced love and care for one another as they were spurred on by a desire to encourage the GBC family through songs. Each session filled their hearts with thanks.

During the event, Eddie shared about the difficulties he had faced in life and God’s mighty hand that brought about a miracle for his son. Ding presented to the congregation with much expert plucking a self-composed song dedicated to God through the hard times His grace has brought him through. One by one, members sitting among the pews went up to share about God’s provision, God’s perfect timing, God’s protection, God’s teachings, God-given opportunities, and God’s wondrous grace. The stories kept coming.

After the worship and sharing session, everyone gathered for dinner at the ground floor. A potluck dinner provided opportunities for the chefs of GBC to care for one another through their food. Despite the uncertainties involved with a potluck – such as whether there would be enough food for everyone who turned up – many people came forth to offer dishes, and the list filled up fast. On the night itself, there was more than enough for everyone.

There were times in preparing for the event where obstacles came up and things looked like they would go wrong. Somehow however, each step of the way, God provided. There was some difficulty in setting up the sound for the instruments at the start, but by the time the worship started, everything was fine. Obtaining a turkey for dinner before Christmas came around was a challenge, but even that came through!

Before Christmas comes round, perhaps it would be a good time to count our blessings and name them one by one, giving our utmost thanks to God. So, what are you thankful for this year?

And now let the weak say, “I am strong”
Let the poor say, “I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us”
Give thanks
