Shaping CG Ministry Together

How do our Care Groups (CGs) help members stand before our returning Lord Jesus?

About 31 of our care group leaders from 19 CGs gathered together for a time of sharing and mutual encouragement on a Saturday morning in a session entitled "Shaping CG Ministry Together".

After their monthly Centralised Leading of Bible Studies (CLOBS) session the leaders took some time out to speak more intentionally about our CGs, especially in the light of Romans 13, which reminded us to be sober and awake in the light of Christ's return.

The group heard from CG leader Huang Weiquan about how his group took steps to connect with the wider church community, including having joint CG sessions with other groups as well as partnering in other ministry events in order to get to know others better.

CG leaders Gerald and Jo Keow Chua shared about how their group was learning to shepherd members towards godliness and growth. They presented a real case study they had experienced, and asked everyone to discuss strategies for walking alongside a struggling member.

CG leader Joel Tang also shared about how his group was thinking about growth and exploring how to reach out to others, unbelievers, new members and those not attending CGs alike.

After the sharing by CG leaders, Elder Caleb Yap took time to share some basic facts about CGs at GBC, including some of the future plans. Briefly, he mentioned that GBC was in a season of change, and that CG leaders could reflect on four areas of growth: (i) newcomers and how we respond to them, (ii) unity and how to connect our CGs to the church, (iii) Godward desire and growing believers' skill in reading and applying God's word, and (iv) deeper relationships at GBC.

He shared some of the ministry's plans for 2020:

  1. Study God's Word – the ministry will parallel the pulpit studying Luke and Psalms.

  2. Keep up with CLOBS – leaders will gather monthly, but also explore what other days work for a second meeting in the month if necessary.

  3. Introduce incubator and newcomer groups –  to help train and refresh our CG leaders, we will formalise the incubator programme; to coordinate how new CGs get started at GBC, we will introduce newcomer groups at least twice a year so we can welcome and integrate our visitors into community better.

  4. Encourage one another – elders will visit CGs more regularly to provide care, and we hope all CGs will interact more outside of their groups, perhaps jointly with other groups and ministries.

As we keep up our regular gatherings with one another in the church, may we continue to lend each other strength, sustain each other's faith, and share in each other's joy as we follow Christ Jesus together – and all the more as we see the Day approaching.
