Praying for Celebration of Hope

Pastor Eugene shares how you can pray for the Celebration of Hope evangelistic event that will take place from 17-19 May 2019.

This weekend, tens of thousands of people will be gathering to hear the gospel proclaimed at the Celebration of Hope evangelistic event at the National Stadium. Many churches are working together to organise this large-scale evangelistic event. Several dozen GBCers have volunteered to be counsellors, joining many from other churches. GBC has also committed to follow up with the attendees.

Indeed, there is much work to be done. Therefore, let us not neglect to pray. Here are some prayer points:

1. Pray for gospel faithfulness and clarity

Colossians 4:3-4 says, “At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison—that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.” God is the one who grants gospel opportunities. Let’s pray for Him to open the way for the gospel to advance. Pray that the speakers, counsellors and others who have the opportunity to proclaim Christ will do so faithfully and clearly.

2. Pray for gospel fruit

As the Scripture says, only God is able to cause our evangelistic efforts to bear fruit: “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” (1 Cor 3:7) Pray that the non-Christians who have been invited will attend the various rallies.

3. Pray for the light of the gospel to shine and bring life to many hearts

Only our Creator God has the power to convert a sinner and give spiritual life. Pray that He will shine in many hearts “to give the light of the knowledge of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Cor 4:6). Pray that those who are dead in sin may be made alive together with Christ and be saved by God’s super-abundant grace (Eph 2:5).

4. Pray for Christians to have a genuine love for those with whom they share the gospel

Paul says this of the Thessalonians: “So being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.” (1 Thess 2:8) May those who serve Jesus at the rallies represent Him well in how they love and speak the truth to  others!

5. Pray for believers to cooperate effectively during and after the event

Ask God to enable all the helpers to “stand firm in one spirit and, with one mind, to strive side by side for the faith of the gospel” (Phil 1:27). Pray for Christians and churches to partner well for the advance of God’s kingdom.

May God be pleased with and bless the work of our hands, for His glory!

This Sunday, we’ll be hearing from Romans 7:1-6 on how Christians are dead to the law because of what Christ has done. Do pray for God to open our hearts to His word.

And next Sunday (May 26), we have an opportunity to hear about outreach work happening in the MacPherson neighbourhood. LoveAid will be talking about what they do to reach out to children, youths, families and seniors in the community. Do attend to find out more about how we can better serve our neighbours.
