Nehemiah War Games
The youths and young adults recently spent a Saturday evening in church for the first ever "Nehemiah War Games". Inspired by the recent studies in the book of Nehemiah from the pulpit and from the care group studis, the Games was a modified version of a familiar youth camp game - candle fight - based on the biblical account.
Organised by the university students and NSmen (young adults) ministry, the purpose of the event was to foster greater interaction between the younger and older ones. The game planning took a few months to conceptualize, with all the intricacies worked out for maximum enjoyment and biblical faithfulness where possible. In the church, it was noted, we tend to live in smaller groups and not really interact beyond our peers in the same life stage. It was a true joy to see the students, regardless of secondary school, junior college, polytechnic or university (and beyond) interacting together over candle fight!
The participants were split into teams and spread out all over the church premises. Like in the book of Nehemiah, they had to work together to build the walls of their "city" and defend it from attackers with some "...work[ing] on construction, and half hold[ing] the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail." (Neh 4:16)
Teams could only win if the walls were complete, and if they brought back the "temple" to their completed "city". It was a game that required great teamwork and strategy. The various obstacles in the games also provided a platform for youths and young adults to get to know each other better.
When asked about the reason for holding the games, Gideon Yap, one of those involved in planning said, "I was first introduced to candle fight at a yough camp by Kang Wei and other older members of the church. We wanted a youth-YA activity to get to know each other, and after some creative brainstorming of the YA committee, we made additions and developments to the original game, and it became the Nehemiah War Games."
Indeed it was a fruitful and enjoyable evening for all. We thank God for the good weather, and the blessing friends and relationships in the church family, we look forward to more of such events in the future.
As a church, let us endeavor to cross more of these age and cultural boundaries, bearing in mind that 1 Corinthians 12:12 says "...just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ."
