Interview with the Youth Camp Commandants

1. What's so exciting about youth camp 2013? Share some of the highlights to come.

Youth Camp 2013 marks a return to the centrality of the gospel, to meet the needs of a new, emerging generation of youths. As camp commandants and a committee, we are excited for the opportunity now to care for and deliver God's word to our siblings in Christ, as we were once cared for by those whose footsteps we now walk in. We believe this year's camp will be unique and certainly be more than a rehashing of previous camps. For one, we have a significant number of new campers, both young (welcome, P6s!) and old(er). Without spoiling too much of the surprise, we as a committee have gone to lengths to ensure a new, creative and spectacular direction with our events and activities, which is sure to be exciting and fun too. In addition, we are also privileged and excited to have Samuel Beh, one of our Youth leaders, to give a message at this year's camp!

2. Explain this year's youth camp theme in your own words.

This year's camp theme was derived from the needs of the youth (in their own words). Crossroads are things we all encounter in our lives, and often we are faced with difficult decisions. Our intention was to put across the message that our principles as Christians are not meant to hinder our decisions or make them more difficult, but instead should provide a solid foundation and guidance in times of uncertainty. This idea of "Cross-Centered Living" will be explored mainly through 4 messages that aim to not just elaborate on the gospel at its core, but also how it relates to the youths' everyday lives. This theme is also going to be explored further through exciting workshops such as a sharing on Missions (by our own Hannah Yeo, based on her recent travels), as well as Church, Family and School workshops to hopefully cover the more accessible aspects of teenage life as well.

3. What are you hoping the Holy Spirit will do in this year's youth camp?

We pray that this camp will foster cohesion and bonding between our youths, regardless of their various ages and backgrounds. We have experienced the support and encouragement of the youth community through the years, and we hope that it will be the same for the youths. It is our prayer that this camp will provide the catalyst for new friendships to be forged among the campers, and for old ones to be further strengthened in Christ, as the Bible is taught.

4. This year's youth camp speakers are Pastor Oliver and our own Samuel Beh. What can we expect from this year's messages?

There will be 4 messages at this year's camp revolving around the person and work of Jesus Christ, and the implications on our lives.

  • The Cross Anticipated (Gen 22:1-19)
  • The Cross Experienced (Mark 14:1-15:47)
  • The Cross Explained (1 Cor 1:18-2:5)
  • The Cross Applied (1 Pet 1:2, 18-21, 2:24-25, 3:18-22)

All of Scripture culminates in the person and work of Jesus Christ; all of history is affected by the event of the cross and everything has changed as a result. We hope the youths would understand both the personal and historical significance of the cross of Jesus Christ.

5. Most of the church will not be attending the camp. How can the average church member be involved in the camp- both in practical ways and in prayer?

Please do continue to keep our committee in prayer as they put the finishing touches on preparation. During the camp, please continue to pray for good health for all campers, as well as the committee, and certainly for good weather when we hold our outdoor games. Pray also for teachable and open heart that ready to hear the Bible taught throughout camp, and that the truths of God will take root and bear fruit in His time.

Church members are more than welcome to drop by during suppertimes most nights, as well as attend our finale night on Friday 20 December where we will have skit performances as well as audience participation games to entertain all ages! We always welcome more contributions of food.

Details about camp can be found below. For further inquiries, please feel free to contact Pastor Oliver, or Nicholas Lee or Joy Tan.
