Interview with the Organising Team for BGST Lectures on 1-2 Peter by Dr Bruce Winter at GBC
1. Thank you for organising this event for us. Who is BGST and why is GBC partnering with them?
BGST is the Biblical Graduate School of Theology, a seminary catering for laypeople. The school is just down the road from GBC (@ Kallang Pudding Road). Given how near they are to us, this is an excellent opportunity for us to explore ways for us to serve each other.
2. Why is there special focus on 1 and 2 Peter? Is there something special that we should take note of when we read these letters from the apostle?
The theme of Dr Winter's course is "Living as both permanent and temporary residents". I think that captures very well the essence of the two letters - they are letters that remind us about how Christians have both a duty to live well and "seek the welfare of the city" (Jer. 29:7) of Singapore, while at the same time remembering our larger calling as citizens of a heavenly kingdom.
3. Who is Bruce Winter and what kind of Bible teacher is he?
Dr Winter (he prefers to be called Brother Bruce!) is a lecturer at Queensland Theological College (where he used to be Principal). Prior to entering into academic theological studies, he had pastored in Singapore for 10 years in the 1970s! A few of the team members had attended his class on the Corinthian letters last year and they found him to be a very clear teacher and extremely pastorally-minded. He is definitely not a "dry theologian".
4. What is the programme like and how can GBC be good hosts to our guests?
The programmes starts with a free open public lecture on 14 April 2014 that will focus on 1 Peter. We expect quite a lot of people from all around Singapore - one way that we can be good hosts is to come attend the lecture ourselves and get to know them! Then, on 15, 16 and 19 April, the programme will continue with a (paid) seminary course that will cover the whole of 1 and 2 Peter, and which will be accessible to the layperson. Again - come and attend the class and be a great host by showing hospitality!
5. The BGST lecture is taking place on the Monday of what Christians call 'Holy Week' during the devotional season of Lent. How can this talk help us prepare us for Good Friday and Easter and remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ?
The Letter of 1 Peter begins by reminding us that it is according to God's mercy that He has "caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Pet 1:3)! I can think of no better way to celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ than to learn from the apostle Peter about this living hope given to us through the events of Good Friday and Easter for us today!
6. Also, how can we pray for this event?
Please pray that God will use Brother Bruce's sharing of the Word to build His Church. Also pray for interest among GBC members as well as other churches - this is a real concrete way to celebrate Holy Week! Lastly, please pray for the preparatory work being undertaken together by BGST and the GBC liaison team. We are enjoying working with BGST who are great partners!
