GBC Women: Studying God’s Word Together

We are so encouraged by the women of our church who are meeting on different days of the week to study the Bible together as well as to pray and encourage one another. Jena Tang shares with us about one of these study groups – Friday Women's Bible Study.

More than 2 years ago, as I was reading Ephesians with my son, Nathan, I was convicted of the need for lay people to be active in building up the church. Ephesians 4:12-13 reads: “...equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood…” Nathan was encouraging me to think of ways I can serve God’s church. I had personally benefitted spiritually from various other in-depth Bible studies before and saw the importance of the centrality of God’s word in the lives of Christians. With the help of Sherri and Belinda, I then decided to start a women’s Bible study at GBC.

Starting a women’s Bible study met the practical need I saw for a weekday Bible study, which would free up time for people on busy weekends. I also wanted to encourage more women to gather together to grow in learning to read God’s word for themselves. Over the past two years, we have gone through the books of Ephesians, 1 Peter, Malachi and Romans.

A big challenge has been preparing for the studies and being sure that I am teaching rightly from God’s word, so I submit myself willingly to two-way accountability, where anyone in the group is encouraged to correct and exhort from God’s word as we study it together.

Through it all, it has been incredibly encouraging seeing the women grow in close fellowship to one another and to God. Watching lives change as the women struggle together to apply the gospel to different life situations has been an immense privilege. The women are open to one another and share their burdens, encouraging each other to walk in the way of the Lord. We also pray for each other’s loved ones. We have meals together and have many opportunities to serve the church together.

Next year, the Friday Women’s Bible Study will be doing an overview of the entire Bible, followed by studies in the books of Ruth and Esther.

In addition to the Friday’s Bible study group, the senior ladies meet on Wednesday mornings to read through Psalms and another ladies group are involved in Precepts Bible Study on Saturday afternoons. Please pray for us as the leaders continue to faithfully teach God’s word and encourage more women to pursue the sufficiency of Scripture in their lives!
