GBC Thanksgiving & Dedication Service 2017

On 17 Sept 2017, both the English and Chinese congregation gathered together to worship God in the newly constructed sanctuary. Neo Yi Ling recounts for us the sweet time of worship and fellowship that we enjoyed on this special day of thanksgiving.

This year's thanksgiving service was particularly memorable for being the first combined service held in our new building. As a church, we returned back to 17 Mattar Road last month and on 17 Sept 2017 both the English and Chinese congregation gathered together to worship God in the newly constructed sanctuary. Just two years prior, we had gathered similarly to make a collective decision to demolish the old building for it to be made anew for the purposes of God!

Ps Arnold who had been with GBC the past 7 years came back and greeted the congregation: "Good morning again each and everyone of you!"

Opening the service was a glorious presentation by the Chinese congregation choir who sang their hearts out for God. Worshiping God for His greatness and faithfulness in a blend of both English and Mandarin brought to mind mental images of Rev 5:9 of the multitudes singing of Jesus - And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the book and to break its seals; for you were slain, and purchased for God with your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”

Thereafter, a video documenting the journey of the rebuilding project was played.

Testament to God's faithfulness is our Emeritus Pastor Dr E N Poulson (known affectionately by many as Grandpa P) himself, who preached from Romans 8:28-29 about God's sovereign provision, on how "God is a Generous Giver". He has known some in the audience since the days of 1952! He summarised the passage as "what God begins, He will complete". God promises to supply all that we really need, such as the safe construction of the present building; and ultimately, our salvation is assured because as believers in Christ we were in God's mind from all eternity past.

GBC's Director Cheong Hee Kiat handed to Ms Rachel Koh, Head of Department from Macpherson Primary School, an annual love gift from the congregation. Ms Koh shared how pupils in MPS have benefitted from the generosity of the church over the years, for which we are thankful to the generosity of God.

Beh Soo Hee and Chi Wei Ming from our Rebuilding Committee thanked the contractors who helped construct the building as it is today. Lead architect Melvin Tan from LAUD Architects had been working with the GBC leadership on this project for the past 7 years!

As the congregation sang with fervour of the faithfulness of God over generations past and guaranteed in the future, it had seemed for a moment that even the walls reverberated with our singing and how God-glorifying it would be indeed if we sang as loud outside of these church walls of the greatness of God as we do within! May God use GBC and her new church building to be an instrument of His glory into the MacPherson neighbourhood and beyond.

It was good to be home, back at 17 Mattar Road; and yet realising too that even this sweet fellowship is not home, while we await the Father’s house which Jesus has gone to prepare for us (John 14:2).
