Essentials of Discipleship: Seminar 3 - Who is God the Son?
Last Sunday, we had our third seminar of the Essentials of Discipleship series. Samuel Tan taught on the crucial topic of "Who is God the Son?".
We learnt that Jesus, while being fully God, is also fully man. Yet, He, unlike all other men, is sinless. Thus, in His death, He could take the penalty for our sin, dying on our behalf, and redeem us from God's wrath. We can trust Him fully, knowing that He understands our pain and suffering, and is able to care for us completely.
Question 20 of the New City Catechism articulates Jesus's nature as Redeemer beautifully:
"Who is the Redeemer? The only Redeemer is the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, in whom God became man and bore the penalty for sin himself"
In this teaching video on Question 20, Pastor Mark Dever teaches us more about Jesus's nature and character:
Question 21 also explains that our Redeemer must be both fully man and fully God. Questions 23 and 24 of the New City Catechism go on to explain why Jesus's nature as both fully God and fully man is important.
Do join us next week for seminar 4 of the Essentials of Discipleship series, where we will follow on last Sunday's session with a seminar on "The Gospel". There will be two sessions taught: at 9:30am and 11:15am.
In the meantime, join us in praying this prayer by David Martyn Lloyd-Jones:
"May God grant that we know…that being born of God, we do not continue in sin. May God grant that we know that the Son of God is keeping an eye on us and is watching over us and is protecting us. May God grant that we may always know…that we can have this assurance that…we belong to God our Heavenly Father, to the Lord Jesus Christ, His precious Son and our Saviour, and to the Holy Ghost, whom He has given to us to form Christ in us and to prepare us for the glory that awaits us."
