EQUIP: Life Together in God’s Word
Pastor Eugene invites everyone to attend the second part of EQUIP 2019 which will focus on how we can be instruments of God’s grace in one another’s lives.
A distinct characteristic of believers in the New Testament is that they are all involved in building one another up in the faith. Biblical growth is not individualistic, but it takes place in the fellowship of the local church. Our sanctification is a community project. We are to encourage and help one another to follow Jesus.
Paul describes the Roman Christians in this way: “I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another.” (Rom 15:14). The apostle expects these believers to teach one another the ways of the Lord. In Ephesians 4:15, Paul urges all the members of the church to “speak the truth in love” to one another, so that the whole body of Christ grows in maturity, love and unity. And to the Christians in Thessalonica, Paul exhorts: “We urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” (1 Thess 5:14)
Our words are powerful. They have the potential to be devastatingly destructive, as James warns us: “The tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.” (Jas 3:6)
Conversely, our words have the power to impart strength, comfort and encouragement. God wants us to speak words of life to one another: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Eph 4:29) This verse never ceases to amaze me: that God should choose to use weak and imperfect people like us to “give grace” to others! Indeed, this is how we are to contribute to the health and growth of the body of Christ. Such a privilege we have!
But also, what an awesome responsibility! How should we help one another to follow Christ and become more like him? According to Romans 15:14, we are to be “full of goodness” and “filled with all knowledge”. The good news is that God gives us what we need. Jesus Christ has graciously filled us with goodness and knowledge through the gospel. So now, as stewards of God’s grace, we are to love and serve others.
Following Jesus in the midst of life's struggles isn't always easy. How can we bear one another's burdens and help others to press on towards Christlikeness? For the second half of the year, EQUIP will focus on equipping us with the biblical resources we need to help one another grow in Christ. Come join us to learn more about how we can be instruments of God’s grace in one another’s lives.
This is the EQUIP schedule for the rest of 2019:
This Sunday, we will be resuming our sermon series in Romans. Pastor Ian will be preaching from Romans 8:1-11. We will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper as well. May God open our hearts and minds to His truth, as we consider the wonder of our new life in Christ!
We will also be having our Quarterly Congregational Meeting at 11am. GBC members, let’s come together to give thanks to God for how he is working among us, as well as to hear about upcoming ministry opportunities in our life together. The QCM is an opportunity for us to be mutually encouraged, as we work together to build up the body of Christ.
