Elders' Election at the English Congregational Meeting

Nehe and jonfen interview header

In 1 Timothy 3:1-7, we read of the qualifications of elders. Paul writes to young Timothy, to appoint elders with the following character qualifications:

"The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, or if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil."

Reaffirming our elders

Our English Congregation Leadership (ECL) have unanimously reaffirmed the calling of Jonathan Tan and Nehemiah Chong as elders. Currently, Elder Jonathan leads a Care Group and is a part of the Missions Committee. Elder Nehemiah has been working with the Young Adults' Ministry for the past eight years.

The ECL are thankful to God for their faithful service and their willingness to continue serving for another term of three years. This will be voted on at our English Congregation Meeting on 19 March 2023.

Members would have received the notice of meeting, which includes the agenda and proxy forms, in their emails. These documents can also be found here. The testimonies of these men can also be found on our website (Jonathan's and Nehemiah's). We encourage all members to prayerfully participate in the meeting, and the related Town Hall on 12 March 2023 if they have questions for the candidates.

Praying for our elders and the church

Jonathan and Nehemiah also shared their prayer requests at our 26 February 2023 service. For Jonathan, pray that he, and his wife will be faithful in the small things, especially loving and bringing up their children. Pray also that they will be able to care for their own souls as they focus on shepherding and caring for the souls of members in the church.

For Nehemiah, on top of being faithful, he requests prayers for continued humility as they seek to serve the church, and not to be caught up in the busyness or to be overly focused on completing tasks at the expense of everything else.

Praying for them at our services

Let us continue to be keeping these men and their families in prayer as they seek to obey God by loving and serving the church in this way. Let us also continue to pray for our church to maintain the love and unity that we have already in the Spirit, as we vote on these matters.
