Compassion Ministry Focus: JiaLe Ministry
What does authentic faith look like? Pastor Oliver invites you to befriend and care for the elderly in our neighbourhood.
"Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world."
James 1:27 (CSB)
James 1:19-27 describes what real, practical Christian religion is: it is about hearing AND doing the Word. Authentic faith will be shown in the fruit of good works. James tells us in the summary of this section what a person who possesses real faith looks like. He gives some examples that will typify this faith lived out. The person with genuine faith will refuse self-deception in his heart and will guard his speech. He will keep himself from the world's corruption – he will pursue godliness. And finally, he cares for orphans and widows. "Orphans and widows" here represents all people who find themselves powerless and vulnerable in this world. It is about caring for the marginalised and vulnerable.

In Grace Baptist Church’s (GBC) immediate context, a marginalised and vulnerable group will be the more impoverished elderly in our MacPherson neighbourhood. While they do need some financial support, often they will have received some help from both governmental and social service agencies. What they lack most is friendships, and they frequently battle isolation and loneliness. They lack connection with others.

We partner with LoveAid in their JiaLe outreach and community work with the elderly in our MacPherson neighbourhood. We currently volunteer with their JiaLe Coffee Club, which takes place on every Wednesdays, from 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm. Here we provide some simple snacks and coffee and tea. After which, there are some activities which engage the elderly. We also take this time to talk and befriend them. Our volunteers go and help twice a month. We are also exploring other ways to provide practical help for these elderly, particularly in areas of wellness and health. The purpose is to build friendships through the meeting of practical needs so that we can introduce these elderly friends to our friend Jesus Christ and the good news that He offers.
Table games are used to engage their minds, with Ps Ollie from GBC in the background.
If you are interested in making friends with the elderly in our neighbourhood through this opportunity, please contact Won Lee at firstname.lastname@example.org or Pastor Ollie at email@example.com.
