Singing in the church choir

Once every other month, the church choir gathers to prepare for leading the congregation in praise and worship of God. This group of faithful singers gathers thrice in order to serve in worship-leading for about an hour each time to learn the new songs and music as well as to discuss and talk about what the songs mean.

As in the Old Testament where the nation of Israel was led into worship by large Levitical choirs as we read in 2 Chronoicles 5 and Nehemiah 12, at GBC, the choir leads us into praise and worship of God through song. Ps 33:3 reminds us to "sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts” emphasizing the skill and excellence with which we ought to worship God. Similarly, 1 Chron 15:22 shows us that excellent music in praise ought to be led by those who understand it - "Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, should direct the music, for he understood it." (1 Chron 15:22). All these are good supporting biblical arguments for why a choir is a valuable part of biblical worship.

The only requirement for participation is church membership, as worship leading at GBC is a duty for church members to perform in service to God. Interested members are welcome to contact Carrie or Caleb to join the church choir.

The choir meets for 2 Sundays between 1215-115pm and 1 Saturday evening preparation between 630-9pm the day before the service they lead at. They serve at both the 8am and 930am services respectively. The time commitment is to serve in worship once every two months for a year.

Many church members have enthusiastically appreciated the choir for the beautiful hymns rendered during the service, which consistently point us to Christ in heartfelt, poignant ways (Col 3:16). Choir members themselves have expressed the joy of unity in Christ that they experience as believers from all walks of life gather to sing God's praise. The singers comprise of experienced and relatively new singers from a variety of professions, as well as students - demonstrating how the music God gives truly can bring people together in a special way.

This Sunday, the choir presented the offertory entitled 'Come You Sinners' and a choral benediction entitled 'Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God'. Have a listen to both presentations below:
