Essentials of Discipleship: Seminar 1 - Who is God?

Hi everyone,

If you haven't already heard, the Essentials of Discipleship series has started!

Last Sunday, Deacon Leow Wen Pin brought us through Seminar 1 titled "Who is God?". We studied the fundamental and ever-important question of who God is, the importance of knowing Him and how we are to respond to Him.

The Essentials of Discipleship series will be taught in conjunction with the New City Catechism, which all church members are encouraged to study. A catechism is a series of basic questions that are meant to serve an educational purpose. The New City Catechism brings a student through 52 basic questions about the Christian faith and provides scripture, teaching videos, commentary and much more to teach and explain the answer to these 52 questions.

The first seminar of the Essentials of Discipleship series was taught in conjunction with questions 1 to 6 of the New City Catechism. In particular, question 2 is very relevant: question 2 is "What is God?". The beautiful answer to this is, according to the New City Catechism:

"God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will."

To explain question 2 further, here is a great and succinct teaching video by Dr. Don Carson:

Excited already? Then do join us tomorrow, 12 July 2015, for the second seminar of the Essentials of Discipleship series, where Tan Yee Kiat will be teaching on "What is sin?". Two sessions will be taught: one at 9:30am (after the First English Service) and one at 11:15am (after the Second English Service).

If you missed the first seminar of the Essentials of Discipleship series, don't fret! The video of the seminar is available on our church website. You just have to obtain the password to access the video from any member of the Discipleship Seminars Committee.

Do also make full use of the resources in the New City Catechism, which its authors have made available to the public free of charge. Apart from accessing the New City Catechism website, you can also download the New City Catechism app, which contains all of the same resources and which you can bring with you wherever you go.

We look forward to seeing you at the Essentials of Discipleship seminars and pray that, through the teaching and studying of His Word, God will bless each of you very richly.

Faithfully,

The Discipleship Seminars Committee
