5 Makan Joints Near Church

Now that we’re back at 17 Mattar Road, where are we going to eat after servce? We spoke to some of our church members and got their recommendations for nearby good eats. We had too many recommendations, and so we narrowed it down to five good eateries nearby for different types of people and tastes.

As we plant ourselves back into the Macpherson community, let’s take the time to move around the neighbourhood and reach out to folks in the surrounding areas, and invite them to church.

 1. For the health conscious family member

U Hakka Niang Tou Foo
Blk 79, Circuit Road #01-46 S370079
Opening Hours: 6am to 12pm. Closed on Mondays.

Did you know that one of the top yong tau foos in Singapore is located just across the bridge at the nearby hawker centre on circuit road? Known fondly to some as “Johor Bahru (JB)” because of the “causeway”-like bridge that we need to cross to get to the other side, this hawker centre holds many treasures. The yong tau foo is hakka style with minced pork and lovely QQ noodles which are well cooked and fairly healthy. Have it soupy or have it dry, your choice. With a selection of handmade meatballs, fishcake, tofu and other ytf items, you are bound to be smitten. Of course, there may be a queue, so be patient, and why not strike up a casual conversation with a stranger?

2. For the slightly peckish

Heavenly Snack (Tian Xia Siao Chi)
Blk 79a Circuit Road, #01-106, S371079
Opening Hours: Tue to Sun, 1130am to 730pm. Closed on Mondays.

Also located at the nearby “JB” hawker centre, this popular store sells the iconic snack muah chee in two flavours – original and black sesame. Made of glutinous rice dough, the muah chee is well done and not too oily. While some may find it a big pricey ($2.50 for the white muah chee and $2.80 for the black sesame muah chee), it’s becoming increasingly rare to find this local snack.

3. For the hale and hearty

Casuarina Prata
187 Macpherson Road
Opening Hours: 10am to midnight on weekdays, 8am to midnight on weekends

A favorite of our church’s worship team after their Saturday evening rehearsals, Casuarina prata has long been known as one of the best pratas in Singapore – the Casuarina prata is famous for being crispy and fresh. Patrons will find that the kosong/plain prata is delectably flakey, giving just the right kind of crunch to the taste, while the egg prata on the other hand, is long in shape, squishy and eggy in the middle, and with crispy sides on either wing of the egg centre. With some fish/mutton curry (your choice), it's perfect. At lunchtime, they also serve up satisfying dishes like nasi briyani, mee goreng and other Indian dishes and drinks. Highly recommended for the hungry.

4. For the true-blue Singaporean

Quan Lai Kuay Chap
Sin Fong Restaurant, 560 Macpherson Road, S368223
Opening Hours: 8am to 1230am daily

Yet another worship team recommendation – Quan Lai Kuay Chap is well known for its herbal-tasting kuay soup, and having some of the best innards and braised duck around. Ask for the tau kua, salted vegetables, nuts and, if you can afford it – deep fried intestines, which really are the highlight here. The trick here is to tell the stall owner how much you’re prepared to pay in advance, and ask him to give you a mixture of things – he’ll know what to do. It’s located right next to a zichar place, so order more dishes if you want some diversity.

5. For the spicy food lover

Kin Kin Chilli Pan Mee
534 Macpherson Road, S368220
Opening Hours: 11am to 9pm daily

Chilli Mee is a strange import from the North where it was first made popular in Kuala Lumpur, and consists of ban mee, or a doughey noodle served dry with minced meat, fishballs and fishcakes. Kin Kin is unique in that it expects you (but lets you choose) to add the dry chilli and vinegar located at every table to taste. Each order also comes with a lovely light broth to pair, and it really is the perfect Sunday lunch. If you feel like comparing, there’s a competitor down the road in the form of KL Chilli Ban Mee, so you can do a comparison if you’d like. Did we mention? It’s also air conditioned.

Why not grab some of your caregroup-mates or someone you've never met in church before, and invite them out for lunch together? Over a good meal, get to know someone you don't know so well, and let's use our lunches for the glory of God.
